University of Peradeniya confers a Litt.D on 3CS Chairman

A past pupil of Central College Anuradhapura, obtaining his bachelor’s from the University of Peradeniya, Professor Madduma Bandara specialized in land water interactions (Fluvial Geomorphology) to obtain his doctorate from the University of Cambridge in 1971.

Returning to his homeland, he served over forty years at the prestigious University of Peradeniya as the Head of Department of Geography, rose to the rank of Professor on Merit and served as the Vice-Chancellor from 1994 to 1997 – a position more prestigious than that of an Ambassadorship and ranked equivalent to the position of Speaker of Parliament. He was conferred the Honorary title  of ‘Emeritus Professor’ by the University Senate on his retirement.

Prof. Madduma Bandara’s research studies mainly focus on issues pertaining to environment, land policy and water resources management. He was responsible for the development of the ‘Concept of Village Tank Cascade Systems’ (1985) and the formulation of the first National Environmental Action Plan(1991). Having over 100 research papers and publications to his credit, the University of Sabaragamuwa conferred an Hon. D. Sc for his contributions in 2010. 

Increasing citations of the professor’s research contributions elevated him to higher ranks of international academia in the fields of social and environmental sciences. Professor C.M. Madduma Bandara was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Letters (D. Litt) Honoris Causa of the University of Peradeniya on 31st August 2022 owing to his many contributions to human progress.
